Re: Flying lessons
Mate had his first test flight / lesson bought for him by his OH for his birthday. He arrived early and was sat in the waiting room. A young slip of a girl came through from Reception and asked if he was okay etc... he said yes, he was in for a lesson and was just waiting for the pilot / trainer etc.
And she said, "Actually, I AM that pilot."
She was of course perfectly competent, but the age thing had him gripping his bum cheeks...

If you can play the drums I reckon you can fly a helicopter.

Yep. And the Red Arrows are being disbanded because of a lack of Native Americans applying for the role of pilot.

They'll be reformed as the All-Inclusive Rainbow Arrows.

Isn't the RAF only looking for people of colour pilots now?

Re: Flying lessons
Ha ha, Bungo.

That was always my plan. Go solo in a glider at least before my driving license.

But then cane Wine, Women, and song and it nose dived from there :-)

Way back, a friend of mine had his PPL (through the RAF cadet scheme), a year or so before he had his car licence.

He reckoned getting the car licence was harder!

My brother in law takes lessons somewhere in Kent

He's promised to take us up when he gets his wings...

Fuck that. I wouldn't get in a car with him

Read the book ,Propeller Head. About some blokes mate who gets his wings and suddenly able to pull loads of birds. He wants to follow in his footsteps but can't afford it, so he downgrades to part ownership.of a microlight.

Fuckin funny book.

As Far Cough has said already join the RAF or even Royal Navy. Get paid to train rather than pay to train.

If you don’t want to go down the military route get your PPL license and work as a bush pilot or on the small island hopper planes.

I did hear it went a bit downhill. I'm probably fondly remembering how it was in the late 90's early 00's. That was probably the last time I went there.

Re: Flying lessons
A mate remortgaged his house for 60k about 10 years ago for his son to take lessons and qualify to get his pilot license in Florida. Came back to the UK and applied to all the airlines but couldn't get a job anywhere, but if you do apparently the way was to work your way up with a budget airline like Ryanair, Wizz, easyJet but they don't pay as much to start £54k airline pilot, after 3-5 years a Captain gets £120k. I expect long haul pays more than short haul. Works in van rental since.

We primarily used to go to RAF Benson in Oxfordshire for training.

Often I think we scared the instructors more than the other way round but not intentionally! 😁

I was in the Air scouts back in the day.
The advanced airman’s badge required time at the cockpit of a plane - 15 of us went to Manston for the day and were taken up in a chipmunk then given ‘control’

Great feeling.

Pilot then took over for the landing and cut the engines when making a steep banked turn just to put the frightened on us all .

Been gliding too - that’s something else......
