Player ‘unable to deliver’ at West ham United – Situation seen as strange due to player’s speed
By Tom Coast
With three goals in five games, Nikola Vlasic is the talk of the town in Italy, especially since Torino got him from West Ham United on loan with an option to buy set at around €15m.
Considering his start, the Serie A side are already rubbing their hand at the deal they made, and the press can’t get enough of the Croatian.
We’ve covered as much of the praise to date, and it continues on Thursday, as Sky Italia’s Nicola Roggero spoke to Toronews about the West Ham loanee.
He started off by saying: “In the Premier League, he was less successful than expected, both at Everton and West Ham. He’s a quality player and strangely in England, he was unable to deliver what he thought he was. I say strangely because he’s quick and efficient, so he is well suited to English football. In Russia, on the other hand, he did very well.”
When asked if Serie A could be the launch pad for Vlasic’s career, since the Croatia international is still only 24, Roggero made it clear his wish is for the Italians to end up triggering the option to buy him from West Ham permanently, adding that he hopes the player ‘stays at Torino for a long time’.
Whether that happens will be entirely up to the Serie A side, who will be hoping their new favourite’s form continues the way it started, giving them little option but to acquire him at what could end up being a bargain price.
As for West Ham, they appear to have already resigned themselves to the fact they will make a loss on the player, having bought him for £27m just a year ago.

Conference League: West Ham United vs FCSB - Memories with Emeric Ienei
West Ham United, the team rated as the second favorite to win the current edition of the UEFA Conference League, has a start below expectations in the Premier League, where it has only four points after the first six rounds (18th out of 20).
The band from the "London Stadium" invested 182 million euros in this summer's transfers, with the objective of forcing entry into the Top 4, given that it finished the previous season in 7th place.
Coach David Moyes brought, among others, Lucas Paqueta (Lyon, 43 million euros, plus bonuses of another 19 million euros), Gianluca Scamacca (Sassuolo, 36 million euros), Nayef Aguerd (Rennes, 35 million euros) and Emerson (Chelsea, 15 million euros).
Also, in the group of "hammers", there are other top footballers such as Lukasz Fabianski (ex-Arsenal), Pablo Fornals (ex-Villarreal), Thilo Kehrer (ex-PSG), Kurt Zouma (ex-Chelsea) or Declan Rice (the team captain, the new star of the England national team).
That makes the value of West Ham United's lot quoted on specialist websites at 432.5 million euros, compared to only 43 million at which FCSB is valued.
Last season, West Ham United reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League, where they were eliminated by the team that would win the trophy, Eintracht Frankfurt (double victory of the Germans, 2-1 away and 1-0 at home).
FCSB return to the groups of a European competition after five years and go to London in one of their worst moments in a decade: just one win in the first seven rounds of the SuperLiga and an emotional qualification at this stage after knocking out difficult mediocre teams like Saburtalo, Dunajska Streda and Vikink Stavanger.
"We did our best in Europe, let's qualify. Very few people believed this. But now we have to have an extra speed. We will have a very difficult opponent in Europe. We will see. Honestly, it gives me chills", said Nicolae Dică, FCSB coach, about the match against West Ham United.
FCSB (then Steaua) and West Ham United met before in the round of 16 of the 1998-1999 season of the UEFA Cup: the red-blue won 2-0 in Ghencea (Laurentiu Roşu goals and Sabin Ilie; the coach was Emeric Ienei) and drew 0-0 at Upton Park (at WHU, stars like Shaka Hislop, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Trevor Sinclar, Paul Wanchope, Paolo Di Canio, Joe Cole and the late Marc-Vivien Foe; coach was the famous Harry Redknapp).
Group B also includes RSC Anderlecht Bruxelles (Belgium) and Silkeborg IF (Denmark).
