Federer was a brilliant classy player who just glided over the court and never seemed hurried ..... like Sir Trevor Brooking with a tennis racquet.
That said I thought his fans were over the top and classless (plus ODDBALLS) & wasnt keen when he started all that fashion parade stuff with cardigans & white blazers.
I always look at players behaviour when they LOSE & thought Federer was a b it self indulgentt sometimes.
Not at the level of Serena Williams /(who was a complete cunt) but preferred Nadal.
He is always dignified , gracious & respectful of the other player when he has lost. Moreso than Federer in my opinion

Never a fan as he was a bit of a cunt in some interviews digging out people who'd beaten him, but what a player.
Certainly was a sight to behold on grass in his prime, would have wiped the floor with Sampras who was a beast himself.

One of, if not, the best ever.
Not sure if he transcends tennis like other sports stars down the years....Tiger Woods, Carl Lewis, Aryton Senna, Pele, Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Messi and Ronaldo....
Is he up there with them?

To be fair to Sampras was looking at the Wimbledon results & he beat Agassi, Goran x 2, Becker, Courier & Rafter in finals.
And CEDRIC PIOLINE
The window between Sampras up to about 2001 & Federer from 2003 let Leyton Hewitt sneak in and win in 2002 against Nalbandian.
In the 19 tournaments since then the big 4 have won the lot ... Federer 8 Djokovic 7 Murray & Nadal 2 each

Would rather watch the likes of Roger, Sampras, Lendl, who played like men, one handed.
Than Nadal, Agassi etc, all two-handed grunts and groans like women.

You might be right on Sampras as Edberg and Becker were not quite as good then but he did still have Agassi to put up with.

Hard to judge players from different eras as often numbers of titles is down to who else was around.
Might be wrong but always thought Sampras had a nice window without EXCEPTIONAL competition.
After starting first Federers era saw him against Djokovic, Nadal & Murray so had some top notch opponents.
Rod Laver won all 4 Grand Slams in 1962 in the amateur era and then missed 21 tournaments before 1968 because he'd turned professional & was banned from competing.
He then won all 4 again in 1969.
Ended with 11 but lost the peak part of his career where he could have hoovered up a few more.

The other of course being Rod Laver.

3rd best of his generation.
So more in the same league as Pat Rafter (3rd best of the 90’s behind Sampras and Agassi) and Steven Edberg (3rd best in the 80’s behind McEnroe and Borg).
Great players - but not the absolute best.

The finest Tennis player to ever pick up a racket. And has an aura about him that separates him from other mortals. He certainly did his bit.

I remember when Pete Sampras was still a threat at Wimbledon and Roger came along and played him off the court in spectacular fashion and everybody was saying "Who the fuck was that?"

That's very true, think his heart just went out of it. Also noticed McEnroe leads the way with most Overall titles (Open Era) although I see my childhood hero Jimmy Connors still leads with most singles titles with 109 although understand why "greatness" is linked to Grand Slams.

To be fair, Borg retired at 26 years old.
11 Grand slams wins and reaching 16 Grand Slam titles up to that age is probably comparable with the 3 greats you mentioned.
Borg also never played in the Australian open apart from once when he was 17 so he was playing for 3 titles a year rather than 4.

What a player he was. Can't really deny that he, Rafael and Novak are the best of all time. To think that Borg and McEnroe won their last Grand Slams at the age of 25.

I know not everyone but it's not unusual to see him cheered like a home player and sometimes moreso at every tournament.

Played until 41. Incredible. For me the greatest ever player at least in my lifetime and an absolute gentleman of sport. Almost universally loved by people the world over.
Djokovic may well end up with more major titles and pass him statistically, but he's not fit to lick Federer's (or Nadal's, actually) tennis shoes.
