Re: Tv Box sets thread again - recommendation pls
Masters of the Air is screen played from two books basically... the title name by Don Miller and Luck of the Draw (Frank Murphy) ... both great reads if you get the chance... same as the Pacific (Helmet for a pillow) and Band of Brothers (the Stephen Ambrose novel)... what I love about all three is the story is told... nothing needs to be added... the story of what these men went through don't need bells and whistles added... it's enough and that's the complete and utter brilliance of it... helps that Hanks and Spielberg are involved... you know they will give to total respect to the players involved... something the BBC found very hard to do in that SAS Rogue Heroes gay fest woke shit show... it's the one thing that rankles me... the Brits have just as great stories as the trio of masterpieces the yanks have put out.... if you get the chance read Pegasus Bridge (Stephen Ambrose... yup an American historian).... it would make every bit as good spectacle as Band of Brothers... incredible story about an incredible group of men.... I just hope if it does go into production that the Brits are nowhere near producing it. I mean isn't there meant to be a remake of the Dambusters?? I bet they have even written out the Black Lab... leave alone please.

"Ludo, I agree on the BoB front, its the most perfect specimen of Television ever created in my mind. Masters of the Air may not live up to that hype but its certainly closer than the Pacific ever got. I've mentioned previously but in the last few years I've become quite friendly with Ron Livingstone the US actor who played Capt Lewis Nixon in BoB and the core cast still meet up ever year or two to commemorate the filming. They created a real bond filming it and actually did basic army training together in prep for their roles. Given the level of fame some of them went on to have after it shows how special that show was that they all still make the effort to meet up."

What a steaming pile of shit that True Detective is. I’m gutted I didn’t follow my instincts to bin it half way through the first episode and somehow got all the way to the start of the third.
Re: Tv Box sets thread again - recommendation pls
.... I've answered my own question... it did happen apparently. landed in Tunisia (not Algeria as I suggested). 60 of the 122 bombers that landed in Tunisia were damaged.

"""Alfs 5:34 Sun Feb 4 Re: Tv Box sets thread again - recommendation pls As I said, Manuel, don't compare. Ben Kingsley is an incredible actor and his performance in the film was stunning"" I never really rated the film and found Kingsley to overact, to the point he was like a cardboard cut out gangster and it ruined the film."
Re: Tv Box sets thread again - recommendation pls
I don't think anything will come close to Band of Brothers but thoroughly enjoying Masters of the Air. Anyone know if it is based on a book or memoirs like the other two? I'd love to know if the episode three raid that flew onto Algeria actually happened as that seems quite unlikely. Perhaps if they wanted to move the unit to N. Africa but a regular mission? At the very least it takes them out of the front line for a week or so and unable to fly missions which I can't imagine happening. I'd love to see how they are going to repair the B17s and fly back to Blighty having landed in the middle of nowhere. Also suspending belief at the level of damage to every B17 on every mission. Be interesting to see if episode four starts with them back on base in England without any explanation of how they got back. I hope it is all factually correct as that was the beauty of BoB.

"Maybe mentioned but Slow Horses is worth a watch, just finished season 2 and know onto 3. Gary Oldman, top stuff and plenty of familiar faces pop up in supporting roles for an episode or 2."

"Alfs - Yep true enough. I've watched the first four available now and really enjoying it, but who doesn't like a London gangster yarn anyway."

"Sexy Beast - Will lean towards Alfs that it's pretty decent, but fuck me some of the violence is close to the mark, who wants to watch people having their heads caved in? It's hard not to compare the characters from the film though, on that I think Gal is reasonably convincing and does actually look like a young Ray Winstone, but Don and Teddy Bass are not convincing at all to me and hard to take seriously."

"Thought the new season of Fargo was fairly good, up until the last episode which was absolute pony. Just watched that mr bates vs the post office, knew nothing of the story, fuck me, my blood was boiling watching it."
Re: Tv Box sets thread again - recommendation pls
"I've watched the first 3 eps of Sexy Beast now, and I have to say, it's pretty good. Don't let the shit reviews put you off - and as mentioned, forget the film, and pretend that the tv version is called 'Psychotic Thugs'."

"I'd love to watch Masters of the air as Band of Brothers is my favourite but it is just another subscription I can't be arsed with. Mind you I had totally missed that Pacific was even made so picked up a second hand Blu-Ray set on EBay so, at least, I have that to look forward to."
Re: Tv Box sets thread again - recommendation pls
"Alfs 6:02 Sun Jan 28 Spot on. The script, direction and cast are all superb. Ian McShane, Amanda Redman, Ray Winstone and especially Ben Kingsley (the latter two playing totally against type) play it perfectly. The TV series was more or less doomed as soon as they came with the idea."
Re: Tv Box sets thread again - recommendation pls
"Manuel, yes the second one is more ridiculous but I enjoyed both to be fair. Yes it's awful but it's an enjoyable awful with none of the modern day box ticking, preaching statements or virtue signalling. Looking forward to the 3rd series."

"I really enjoyed Loudermilk and actually know Ron Livingston pretty well these days. His wife, Rosemarie De Witt plays the mother of my daughter in a film to be released on Disney+ later this year and I spent all of last week with Ron and his family at the Sundance Film Festival. He's a top top bloke and hoping Loudermilk gets picked up to crack on with the 4th season as the broadcaster who funded the first 3 seasons went bust but its popularity on Netflix recently has brought some other firms to the table with a view to filming the 4th season. The writers actually have it scripted out to 7 seasons in total so if it does get picked up there's plenty of scope that it could get a good run and another 4 seasons in total to come."
