A prominent former Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape.
Essex Police are investigating claims the player, who also featured for England in the 2010s, attacked an ex-partner.
He was held at Stansted Airport on Sunday by Border Force officers before being taken in for questioning by detectives on the case.
A statement from Essex Police said the suspect, whose name cannot be reported for legal reasons, has been bailed until “late February 2026” pending further inquiries.
Telegraph Sport has confirmed the identity of the player in question. He was stopped at a passport control point as his details showed he was wanted by police, according to The Sun, which broke the news of his arrest.
A complaint was believed to have been made by the footballer’s former partner several weeks ago.
The suspect was held for several hours at a local police station where his fingerprints and DNA sample will have been taken.

Andy Carroll was arrested at Stansted recently
EX-England footballer Andy Carroll faces a possible jail sentence after he was charged with breaching a non-molestation order.
The former West Ham striker, 36, is due in court on Tuesday.
Details of the case cannot be revealed for legal reasons.
He was arrested in April, with the alleged offence said to have been committed a month earlier.
The Sun on Sunday reported in July how an unnamed ex-Premier League star was nicked at an airport in front of other passengers after flying into the UK.
Now that he has been charged and named by police, we can reveal it was Andy Carroll.
He was held shortly after getting off a flight at Stansted, following a journey from France.
Essex Police told The Sun on Sunday this week: “A man has been charged with breaching a non-molestation order. Andrew Carroll, 36, of Epping, was arrested on April 27 and the alleged offences relate to an incident in March. He is due to appear at Chelmsford magistrates’ court on December 30.”
A non-molestation order is an injunction issued by a civil court, usually aimed at preventing a person from going near another individual, address or both.
People who breach one, depending on the circumstances, can face criminal action resulting in a jail term of up to five years.
A source said at the time of Carroll’s arrest: “It seemed as if an issue was flagged up to the Border Force officers at passport control at Stansted, which led to police being called. He was questioned then taken away.
“It caused quite a kerfuffle as there were lots of other passengers around where he was arrested.”
Carroll is thought to be worth £25million, up from £19million in the Sunday Times Rich List 2019.
He returned to England over the summer, having left Bordeaux to play for National League South side Dagenham & Redbridge.
He married Towie TV star Billi Mucklow, 37, in 2022 but two years later, it was announced the couple were divorcing.
They have three children together, while Carroll has two others from a previous relationship.
Since 2024, he has been in a relationship with hairstylist Lou Teasdale.

Re: Former England and Premier League footballer arrested on suspicion of attempted rape
I didn't say it was a West Ham player. Didn't mean to suggest it was either.
I just had a look at players from that era and decided to list them here as I thought it was interesting. Some of our players who were average at best got in the England team that decade.

Some other ex England ex prem was arrested at Stansted back in July. I think these stories are a load of click bait that seems to be recycled every 6 months and you never hear about it again.
Re: Former England and Premier League footballer arrested on suspicion of attempted rape

So did I but the mods removed my post. The person I assume also lives in Essex so that narrows it down further. I'd remove any of the northern based players at the time.
