New UK rules for Expats who are Dual Citizens

Post Sydney_Iron »

This is fucking madness😡

Thought i would post as a few expats on here, expect in the same boat as me!

The UK Government is introducing rules saying anyone Born in the UK who now lives overseas and has taken dual citizenship and passport of that country, can ONLY travel to the UK if they have a British passport!

British and Irish dual citizens bear costly brunt of UK passport changes - ABC News

My UK passport expired in 2009 and as i had an Australian passport as well couldn't see the point in paying for 2, living this side of the world the Australian makes things easier, going to NZ and other regional countries visa free etc, but now if i want to come to the UK i need get a British passport again but as it expired so long ago the steps i need to take are fucking insane.

Be easier to go to France and get a Dinghy across the channel, may even get free hotel accommodation as well 🤣

You also have to declare other passports on both forms Ayssie and British and they are indeed linked so you can't get a visa.

Oh and you'd have to be mad to come back from Aus to the UK for health care it's much better there for most things, well it was unless it's turned to shit.

Its just a revenue raise in many ways, any dual citizen now needs a UK passport to get into the UK, and an Australian to get into Aus and vice/versa, but if your not a duel citizen its one or the other!

So any Brit emigrating is better off, just staying as a permanent resident, and any Aussie doing the same to the UK to live and work doing the same, DONT become a dual citizen which is completely contrary to what they have said up until this point!

And yes the Aussie passport is outrageous, apparently its going up again soon!!!
Of course it isn't better, you get so much more with dual citizenship and a UK passport costs about £90 for ten years that's under £10 a year it's fuck all.. I bet a loaf and a carton of milk costs that in oz now.. 😂

You can't just re enter Australia either you need a return visa or you did before

As soon as anyone takes Australian citizenship they have to enter Australia on their Australian passport. An expired one may suffice but then you would also have to convince the airline to let you on. We travelled to the UK with our kids who had expired UK passports and they just let them come through the UK (then EU) exit with us with their Aussie ones and expired UK ones. But legally were in the country as Aussies so were only allowed to stay the same amount of time as an Aussie tourist. Though doubt any British citizen entering like that would ever get deported, in fact no cսnt does from what I can see.

You can get what they call a certificate of entitlement (COE).and that is attached to your passport (Aus/NZ/CDN etc) but when you renew your passport you have to get another COE, cost of COE is £589, so about 5 times the cost of a UK passport!!! and as much hassle in paperwork and documents to submit, but if in a hurry it maybe quicker as wait times for UK passport is currently 10 weeks from applying in Oz i read, seems extreme but maybe lot of people like me need it just in case or when parents etc pass or Weddings family get togethers etc.

https://www.gov.uk/right-of-abode/apply ... ntitlement

Anyway, i just posted as there are other Aus/NZ/Canadian, expats on here (or used to be) who may not be aware of the changes incoming, as until my Sister in NZ told me, i wasn't, hasn't been very well communicated, maybe a lot of people getting turned away when showing up for flights come the end of Feb!!!!

I would have to agree with you Sydders, that just doesn't seem right, so the question is why??
The new ETA requirement starts next month, UK and Irish nationals are exempt so it seems if you have dual nationality then as your a Brit you HAVE to use a British passport.

Just not been thought through very well, as mentioned earlier if I was born in Aus to British parents I can hold duel nationality but still use an Australian passport to enter UK, being born in the UK you cannot?????

I will apply for a UK passport but reckon this new requirement may get amended as it makes no sense.
Like I say on the face of it it don't seem right, what if someone in your position had a good reason to return quickly...I'm pretty sure it's been 'thought through' though, say what you want but these are not stupid people who makes these rules, then it has to be passed through gov etc. I wouldn't hold your breath on it being amended anytime soon, and if you get a new PP then you won't really care anyway.

That’s what I thought but no, the ETA is separate, Australians need one but anyone born in the UK now needs a UK passport to enter the UK even if they hold dual citizenship it’s mental really.

Get a UK passport and don’t need the ETA as well!!! Go figure 🤷‍♂️

Yep...the ex-pats and their sense of entitlement offends me more than any (decent ).immigrant.
come back every time they need free health care .
Oh do fuck off, The UK has just pulled the rug on anyone who has dual nationality, making them all get and retain UK passports if we want to visit family etc, this after years of saying it’s ok to take Aus/NZ/Canadian citizenship and use the passport of that country.

NO other country is doing this, I can use my Aus passport in every country in the world except the UK now,  simply because I was born in the UK!

And you reckon most in Aus/NZ would come back to the fucked up NHS when we have access to free and better healthcare this side of the world?????

gimme a fucking break😂

They can if they didn't allow their passport to expire like this prat.

For all the people who say on here that immigrants can learn to live like us or just bugger off back where they came from, I'm surprised to see a thread saying people who turned their back on the country and didn't even bother renewing their home passport should be allowed to saunter back in on an expired one. Nah, you made your bed, then pissed in it, now lay in the filth.

Oh, and my Australian passport shows my country of birth, so not like i can just rock up at Heathrow, it clearly says it next to my mug shot.
Well I didn't know that did I so guess that answers my question. I didn't read what proceeded that as ZERO interest.

Its only commonwealth countries, as they have dual citizenship agreements with the UK, so i guess mainly Aus, NZ and Canada and if you do emigrate to these countries it's a big advantage to take citizenship, gives you more rights, access to government funded schemes etc and your able to vote, get passport etc.

Crazy thing is that had i been born in Australia to UK parents i could of got UK citizenship and passport, and this new rule wouldn't apply to me and i could go in and out of the UK as i pleased using an Australian passport, it's only for those born in the UK this applies to.

I would quite happily renounce my UK citizenship, got no intention to even live there again, don't mean that as a slur on the UK BTW, just the realities of life, but apparently i cant, Want to see family in the UK and my mum who is on her last legs then as i was born in the UK, i need a UK passport to enter.

Bureaucratic nonsense and red tape bollocks.

Oh, and my Australian passport shows my country of birth, so not like i can just rock up at Heathrow, it clearly says it next to my mug shot.

Oh, and Gank, do fuck of you retarded fuckwit 🤣🎣

I'm just wondering if old Sydders attempted to enter the UK on his Aus passport if the system is clever enough to see that he is also a UK citizen and reject entry? I assume it must be or why even implement this.
