West Ham Number 10’s

Post Nutsin »

Over the years we’ve had some quality number 10’s Don the claret n blue. Here’s a short list of some of the greats. Tevez and Payet didn’t wear the number 10 shirt but played the role so they have to make the list.

1) Tevez
2) Payet
3) Brooking
4) Clive Allen
5) Pop Robson
6) Di Canio
7) Bellamy
8) Paqueta

So who starts, who is on the bench for the FA cup final on game day?

Yes I remember Lyall was going to use him in the hole behind the front two of Cottee and Goddard in a diamond formation.  Ironically not only did Goddard's injury lay the golden road for Frank but also the emergence of Alan Dickens.  Remember Frank saying he was happy with his original position as he had enjoyed playing "in the hole" all his life!  🤣

Yep, I think most know the story that he was in midfield for first game of the season when Goddard got injured and Frank was then pushed up. I remember well his home debut against QPR, night game, he bagged a brace and everything was like who the fuck is this bloke.

I met him in Hong Kong one night circa 2005 I was a wee bit worse for wear and chewed the poor cunts ear off for a bit :-)

Not sure if Frank was a real 10, didn't he usually play with his back to goal or at least beyond the 10 position? He was probably underrated though, was pretty technical, much more so than Cottee. Loved him and is right up there as one of favourite hammers. It was a glorious day when we re-signed him, just a pity it didn't go too well second time around, obviously the injury didn't help.

Cottee wore 10 that season, Frank wore 8 but probably played the role of an 8, 9 and 10 the way he ran around.  Maybe it's because he didn't run in training so he was fresh!  😂  Brooking certainly the ultimate 10 for me but after Trevor and Billy, Frank is up there as a favourite as well.  Just something about him, it's a shame most of his goals are lost as there was no TV coverage for half a season.  Fearless he was, it would have been interesting to see him and Hurst up front, they would have battered the opposition.

Sir Trev will always be the WHU number 10 in my eyes...
just watched his video on WHUTV ...it was good but a sad watch if you get what I mean.
I was their in 84 against Everton when EVERYONE stayed behind and even a few Scousers TBF.

Great times indeed

For those who still remember...Jimmy Greaves and the great John Dick - playing alongside Vic Keeble!  What a powerhouse strike partnership that was back in the day!

Payet was more like Dev than Trev

Not sure what I'd call Paolo's position.

Others either not many games at all or not worthy of consideration in my view.

Probably Trev or Martin Peters ???
