KLM,
i hear you, i'm as down as ever have been,FFS Watford,Man U,Palace and Everton are in the semi's,terrible.

i was alarmed when I saw our line-up with Valencia starting.Far to attacking,we're at home and with Payet Lanzini,Antonio and Cresswell there was enough creative flair to take on Manu.
The Irony of it though if Valencia had taken either of his 2 golden chances then Bilic would of been justified in selection.
It didn't happen though.
We would of been better suited to and in that strange way been more attacking by bringing on Collins for Valencia with Tomkins going to right back, releasing Antonio on the right wing. This would of meant one of Manu midfielders marking Antonio, thus giving our other midfielders more space.

Let's be honest, it's not the first time bilics tactics haven't been spot on to start with, but I can't recall another game where we've been second best and he hasn't tried to change it. We're normally a different team after half time if the first half is that bad

We could have had a right go at em if Bilic livened himself up and put Antonio on the RW

So... why the silence? WHEN is somebody going to step up and tell us WTF was going on (in arguably our most important game of the season)?

Why the strange starting 11? WHY WHY WHY no changes at HT when everyone and his dog could see it was needed????

Obviously against strong attacking teams we need a good effective holding midfielder...

We've been shipping goals recently...so obviously needs to be sorted...

you and I agree Brentford, I watched how City employed 2 deep lying midfielders to nullify PSG in the 2 legs and Slav may need to try and employ this in future when he sees his team being dominated in midfield and especially the middle of midfield. Hindsight is a perfect science of course and perhaps he stuck with what had been working and believed we would eventually force forward enough to get a goal or two, We did but only after they were 2 up and started to try and close the game out. We came close to taking them to extra time in the end but without Randolph we would have been 4 or 5 down so the reality is that we need to defend better as a team. Obiang is the one player this season that has had a bit of a raw deal. Kouyate was poor last night and Noble struggled to make an impact too. They are both not defensively inclined and neither are Lanzini or Payet so we exposed in that area in front of our back four and the half way line. Acres for Carrick, Fellani and co to work in.

Anyway, cannot be too critical of the manager because he has got most things right this season but just hope he could see the problem and will work wth Tony Henry to recruit and buid the squad to allow a change of tactics when we get in this kind of situation again.

Re: West Ham v Man Utd - Official Match Thread 1-2 FT
Don't disagree with you however I do know that playing someone infront of the defence in a holding role is effective as I have played there myself. I agree that football is a simple game and not chess but that tactic is a simple one and it was pretty obvious that something had to be done at HT as it was like watching a testimonial at times with them strolling straight through the middle and having time and space to pick a pass and even wait for others to give them better options.

I also think Obiang is a class player who deserves to start and may be getting peed off playing bit part roles.
Valencia was a waste of space and one too many attackers too, and I think overall we are becoming a bit too gung ho and hasty esp at home with the fullbacks and midfield charging forward or playing hopefull balls too quickly through the middle from the back to the advanced midfield areas which is causing us to constanly lose possession and be vunerable to counter attacks as we have seen lately.
The defence is being stretched all over the place and imho we need to get back to basics as we have enough talent to score goals but seem to have developed a mentality of we'll score more than you which will only take us so far.

People place too much emphasis on tactics these days and see the game like a game a chess 'they have too much space in the middle so we should put one of our own men there to give them less sapce' hardly fucking genius is it. Do people really think that sending on Obiang would have changed the game, ffs? How about just playing better? Or is that too simple? And what if Obiang did stifle them in the middle, LVG would probably just put one of his players out wide where there would now be more space. There are 2 managers, remember.

Obiang was a no brainer esp after the first half. They had way too much time and space in the middle and were simply walking through our midfield picking passes, was like a testimonial.

Re: West Ham v Man Utd - Official Match Thread 1-2 FT
feel v/down about this. The main fault, imo, was Bilic got his tactics wrong. We were too gung-ho against a top 4 side. Bilic is normally so good at changing things but we carried on getting nowhere. A 4-5-1 might have been better; obiang for Valencia.
Individually most of the players did their job, in a system that was nullified by MU, but two were sub-standard: Lanzini and Valencia. I hope the crowd don't get on the back of the latter but he is starting to look lightweight. true Anthony made a big error but otherwise his performance was good, it seems to me.
oh well, it was good while it lasted. Pip Pip!

In hindsight last night will be good for us. We aren't the finished article yet but we are getting there its all experience that Slav will learn from , we beat both Scousers away this season and hopefully will end up in Europe .

PS As with Soldo though, I don't really understand why people analyse decisions that were correct.

Surely we should be applauding them, or were they lucky getting it right???

Re: West Ham v Man Utd - Official Match Thread 1-2 FT
It's common knowledge and fact that officials favour the so called more fancied teams (Barca -v- Atletico last week a great example), but you'd have to ask them why this is the case, as I've never really worked out why it happens.

Seeing as it's been happening since the beginning of time though, not sure why it bothers people so much still.

Frustrating, but Christ I'm used to it and expect it now so water off a ducks back.
