People also seem to forget that Lanzini was out - and he's our most creative player.

We all want to see silky skills in the middle of the park but the fact is players who can weave in and out of defenders are very rare at this level.

The fact that we have one excellent creative player is remarkable - many teams don't have anybody.

But when he's out we obviously need to adapt, which is what we did the other night. When he's back we will have a bit more entertainment (and better free kicks).

It's not rocket science

If you play 4 across the back facing their own goal they can easily get closed down/pressed and then players get blamed for ""individual" errors, when it's actually poor coaching

It's a far better tactic for the defenders to pass the ball forward first time to keep us moving forward quickly

Whether that means a big boot forward, an accurate long pass or an accurate pass into midfield into the oppositions half (that is certain to find the man) it doesn't matter, the ball needs to be played forward quickly

That's what we did against Huddersfield which was different from the 3 previous games this season

One final note on this game is what a great effort our fans made to spur the side on, despite everything. It was worth a goal!

Funnily enough Billic did say pre match that they had been working on "going back to the basics"

If they play like that and get a win away from home I will be more than happy.

To be honest if they play like that every game for the rest of the season and get good results I'll be doing flic-flacs.

Some of the cunts on here who whine every time the ball goes 6 feet in the air or is passed more than 10 yards should switch to watching the fucking ballet.

Who went to the game last night thinking that Bilic could simply flick a switch and that result in us playing attractive entertaining football?

Nobody, so last night's performance was a step in the right direction towards playing better and more effectively. now let's hope that we build on that performance against WBA on Saturday.

Infidel, Steve,

For me the point is one of 'needs must' and gradual improvement, which often means concentrating on the basics like not conceding first of all. We managed that last night, for the first time this season, and we also scored twice, and we also won the game for the first time this season. That's more than good enough for me given the mess we looked like for the last few weeks.

If we are still playing like that at the end of the season with the players we have (the squad is clearly too small, but we do have some very good players nonetheless) then I won't necessarily be happy. But last night, before the game, I think most of us would have settled for a wishlist that ran 1) win 2) clean sheet 3) show some organisation and most importantly some fucking bottle.

We achieved all those things, and at times looked decent doing it too. It wasn't champagne football but by God it was better than we've seen for some time. That suits me.

Infidel: Interesting comments: certainly split opinion on WHO - 3 points are gratefully snapped up but I thought we were poor - endeavour yes, Antonio excellent in first 45m and Carroll a presence up front but - uninventive, ball in the air too much, not sure we were going to score bar the deflected opener.
Some were outraged at the suggestion we weren't great but we have seen much, much better West Ham teams than this, surely? Is it wrong to expect better (and want the best) from our team especially with that team sheet?
