West Ham United in race to sign £17m defender who is dubbed the next Vincent Kompany

Mark Marston

West Ham United have joined Napoli in the race to sign a £17m-rated Belgian defender, according to a recent report.

The Hammers are set to miss out on European football this season and transfer planning has already begun behind the scenes.

It seems as though Julen Lopetegui will be the man to replace David Moyes and one of his first signings could be a promising young centre-back.

West Ham target Zeno Debast

West Ham United are in the race to sign Anderlecht centre-back Zeno Debast but face competition from Napoli, according to areanapoli.it.

Tuttojuve originally cited The Irons as an interested party and now it seems potential suitors are mounting.

The Belgian club are hopeful of sanctioning a £17m sale for the 2003-born but recognise, due to his contract expiring next year, that they may have to resign to a fee of around £13.7m.

Debast has earned comparisons to Belgium and Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany.

For that price, interest will only intensify over the next few weeks, so it seems West Ham will need to move quickly if they are to land his signature.

Zeno Debast statistics

Debast’s statistics make for very impressive reading.

The 20-year-old ranks in the top six per cent for progressive passes compared to his positional peers across Europe, as per FBref.

Further, he sits in the top 12 per cent for successful take-ons, evincing his willingness to play out from the back.

Despite his age, Debast has already captained Anderlecht, which shows his leadership qualities and potential to be a future skipper.

Whoever acquires his signature this summer will be getting one of the bargains of the window.

Freddie Potts interview: 'New West Ham era is the perfect chance for us youngsters to impress'

Dazzling League One loan spell has academy midfielder well set for crack at first-team under new manager next season

Malik Ouzia

While most of the team-mates he has just spent a terrific loan season at Wycombe alongside jet off on their summer holidays, Freddie Potts has been back at West Ham this week, training with the first-team squad during the final days of David Moyes’s reign.

“I’ve seen them all on social media, posting on planes and stuff, places I wanted to go,” Potts tells Standard Sport.

“But I’m not bothered. I’m back at West Ham, trying to prepare myself for pre-season, because I know it’s going to be a really important one for me.”

It is forecast to be a summer of change at West Ham, with Julen Lopetegui set to take over from Moyes when the Scot’s contract expires, and for a crop of highly-rated youngsters like Potts, George Earthy and Ollie Scarles, one of opportunity, too.

“It’s a fresh start,” Potts agrees. “No one knows too much about the young players, whoever the boss is going to be. It’s a new first impression that you have to make, so we’re all excited for it.”

Freddie Potts is targeting a run in the West Ham first-team

None can be better placed than the central midfielder, who went to Wycombe last summer in search of regular playing time and found that and so much more.

In a genuine breakthrough campaign, the 20-year-old made 43 senior appearances, the majority of them starts, played in a Wembley final and finished with both the club’s fans’ and players’ player of the year awards. Little wonder that he says moving to Adams Park was “the best choice I could have made”.

“There’s pressure to win, that was the main thing I learned,” he says. “You do get it in the Under-21s, but there’s more emphasis on it when you’re playing and peoples’ jobs are on the line.”

A first move away from home provided familiar rites of passage — “I’ve had to live by myself for a bit, learn new things, make stuff rather than relying on mum and dad” — though perhaps with added significance, given Potts has grown up at his boyhood club, where said father, Steve, was once a player and is now U21s coach.

So, what is the biggest difference between the player that left Rush Green and the one now trying to impress in training with the likes of Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta?

“I think probably my character,” he says. “I used to be pretty shy. I feel like I’ve just become a different person off the pitch — and that’s going to help with my game on the pitch as well.”

There is no doubt, however, as to where Potts wants to spend the coming campaign.

“My main goal is to make my stamp in the first-team at West Ham,” he says. “I want to be here for the next year.”

Club ready to activate clause to sign West Ham man – Player keen on move

According to a claim in the Algerian media, Lyon are looking to keep Saïd Benrahma beyond this season. The winger joined the French side on loan from West Ham United during the last transfer window.

Competition.dz have reported on the latest developments regarding the future of Benrahma at West Ham and they say he wants to remain at Lyon after a successful loan period with the Ligue 1 club.

It’s claimed Lyon are also keen for the Algeria international to remain with them and they are ready to activate the option to buy clause, reportedly set at €14.4m. Another clause said to be in the agreement is that Lyon would have to pay the Hammers 10% of any future profit.

Initially joining on loan from Brentford during the 2020/21 season, Benrahma had struggled in this campaign to get regular football at West Ham. Subsequently he was loaned out to Lyon at the end of the last window for a reported €6m fee.

Since arriving in France, the player has made 13 appearances, scoring 2 goals. He’s contracted to the Premier League side until June 2026.
