consecutive studio albums that sound completely different
|
I can think of a few where its difficult to believe its the same artist.
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Chance and Somewhere in Afrika
Pink Floyd - The Final Cut and A Momentary Lapse of Reason
Adam and the Ants - Dirk wears White Sox and Kings of the Wild Frontier
Al Stewart - Famous Last Words and Between the Wars
Amy Studt - My Paper Made Men and Happiest Girl in the Universe
UFO - UFO2 Flying and Phenomenon
Marillion - Holidays in Eden and Brave
Adam Ant - Strip and Vive Le Rock
David Bowie - Diamond Dogs and Young Americans
Yes - The Yes Album and Fragile
Camel - Stationary Traveller and Dust & Dreams
IQ - The Wake and Nomzamo
Queen - The Game and Hot Space
Faith No More - The Real Thing and Angel Dust
any others?
I thought of Mike Oldfield, but I wouldn't know where to start as he has changed musical direction so many times.

Prodigy (well Liam Howlett really) were and still are fantastic. The moment they decided that guitars were the difference was the turning point. Ministry did a similar thing when they released Psalm 69. I agree that Invaders must die is my favourite.

Mad dog. I love them mate. Always have.
And yeah, Poison is a track off Jilted that could sit nicely on Fat of the Land. It leads Jilted into that era.
Love the early stuff. The Experience has become a very nostalgic and evocative album for me. Takes me back to care free days.
I even like the so called "worst" album that Liam did on his own with Spitfire on it. Got some decent tracks. There is a track on it that samples Michael Jacksons Thriller. Good track.

Devin Townesend's entire oevre. Extreme Metal followed by Ambient and Showtunes pretty much.
Neil Young too. From folk to his Crazy Horse heavy rock noise (Arc Weld is awesome) and the the sore thumb that is Trans.

Russ. Not denying that. I think it also had something to do with the success of "poison".
Personally I still love their early stuff (and some of the recent ones like "omen") and have ironically been listening to them again at the gym the last week or so.

Mad Dog:
I think Prodigy moved with the times.
The Experience was Rave / Hardcore. Jilted was Hard Dance and then Fat Of was Big Beat / Electro.
They are very much albums of their environment at time of release.

Prodigy. First 2 albums vs all the other ones. Jilted generation to fat of the land was a huge shift in tone. I hate fat of the land

Never a dull moment to Atlantic crossing where he started on the path to disco diva. (although there was a sort of covers album in between)
