West Ham January transfer guide: David Moyes must find new striker and defensive cover in defining window

By Jack Rosser

West Ham are having another spectacular season, but next month may define just how high they can fly.

The Hammers go into the January window with fresh investment following Daniel Kretinsky's purchase of a 27 per cent stake in the club and a new head of recruitment, Rob Newman, leading the way.

Kretinsky has warned fans not to expect big spending in the first window following his investment, but the club are now in a far better place financially should they decide to act - and that is exactly what David Moyes wants to do.

The Scot, always careful when it comes to spending money wisely given West Ham's record under predecessor Manuel Pellegrini, has not hidden his desire to invest in the New Year.

West Ham dropped out of the top four when losing to Arsenal in December, but remain within touching distance of the Champions League places - a rare chance they do not want to waste through a lack of action.

Moyes has been hit by injuries at the back - losing Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna to significant injuries - while it has now been almost a year since Sebastien Haller was sold to Ajax, leaving Michail Antonio as the only senior striker.

The areas in need of addressing are clear. Moyes wants to bring in a player who can provide a "burst of energy" to keep them in the top-four hunt, just as Jesse Lingard did last season.

Lingard is a target once more for the east Londoners, though there is a suggestion that the 29-year-old would prefer to move in the summer when his Manchester United contract expires. Whoever comes in, an attacking option is on the wish list.

As well as a creative addition, Moyes is looking to bolster at the back following the losses of Zouma and Ogbonna. The former could be back in February but Ogbonna is out for the season and, at 33, will need replacing sooner rather than later.

Liverpool's Nathaniel Phillips is being considered and has been open in his willingness to leave during the January window.

In terms of outgoings, offers may be considered for Andriy Yarmolenko, though there are some within the club who feel that his European know-how could prove valuable come the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Ryan Fredericks may also be looking for a new club, though fitness issues at the back could see him stay until the end of the season.
